Lot 48: its the emmys!

September 17, 2018

its the emmys!

do you know what today is? ITS THE EMMYS! i wait for this day all year long! its my superbowl.  as a tv writer, you can understand why my favorite night of the year is when tv is celebrated.

last year, we went all out to celebrate the emmys and attended a viewing party at a very nice bar in beverly hills.  it was the best night.

i did not make that face on purpose!

this was inside the bar, it was really nice!  we all had ballots and everyone was dressed to the nines.

i obviously wanted to attend a viewing party again but because this year its hosted on a monday, there weren't a lot of viewing parties available and the place we went last year was only hosting a pre-emmys party.  so i'm just watching it at home this year.  i almost got to be a seatfiller and attend the emmys this year but the seatfiller company i go through did a lottery for who got to go because there were so many submissions and i am not a very lucky person.  but mark my words, i will attend the emmys someday! and many times!

i wanted to make some predictions and we will see how close i get. you can get a ballot here if you want to make guesses for tonight!  i don't have cable, so i have to pay to see things that aren't on hulu or amazon prime or netflix.  so i haven't really seen atlanta, or curb your enthusiasm, and a lot of other things. also, i have my own moral rules for watching things.  i don't think westworld is appropriate and uses its power irresponsibly.  there is never an excuse for nudity. ever. so you can understand i haven't really seen game of thrones either.  there is this wonderful thing called vidangel where it edits out the things you don't want to see, like nudity or swearing so i have seen GOT some with that but i have only seen through season two.  and yes, vidangel has been through A LOT of lawsuits.

OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES:
this one will be tough.  game of thrones wasn't eligible last year so it kind of evened the playing field for the other contenders.  GOT has won outstanding drama series each year but it is against the handmaid's tale this year, so i'm not sure.  it will definitely be one of the two.  making guesses make me nervous because i don't like being wrong! but...

prediction: the handmaid's tale. i think GOT has had its moment.

OUTSTANDING COMEDY SERIES.
this is where i live! i'm a comedy writer! but i think there are a lot of wildcards here this year.  the winner will be either atlanta, silicon valley, or the marvelous mrs. maisel.  like last year with drama with GOT being out of the running, veep is out of the running this year, which has kind of evened the playing field.

prediction: atlanta.

i haven't seen everything so i am not equipped to make a guess on actors but i'll wager a guess anyway.

LEAD ACTOR, DRAMA
sterling k. brown, this is us.

LEAD ACTOR, COMEDY
donald glover, atlanta

LEAD ACTRESS, DRAMA
elisabeth moss, the handmaid's tale. duh.

LEAD ACTRESS, COMEDY
rachel broshnahan, the marvelous mrs. maisel

SUPPORTING ACTOR, DRAMA
i really don't know.  i will be surprised if it's matt smith or joseph fiennes. happily surprised.

SUPPORTING ACTOR, COMEDY
this is also really hard to call.  probably someone from saturday night live or harry winkler. i hope its tituss burgess!

SUPPORTING ACTRESS, DRAMA
i hope its vanessa kirby! i think it will either be yvonne or thandie.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS, COMEDY
again, probably someone from saturday night live.

from the above the only thing i really care about is the writing. its the thing i care about most in the entire emmys because that's my category!

OUTSTANDING WRITING FOR A DRAMA SERIES
i really hope phoebe waller-bridge wins killing eve is fantastic, but mostly i want peter morgan to win for the crown.  he is such an incredible writer.  and out of all of them, i think he is the strongest writer.

prediction: peter morgan, the crown.

OUTSTANDING WRITING FOR A COMEDY SERIES
alec berg has two chances to win and i really hope he wins! i have been following his career for years.  i love how many women are nominated in that category! i REALLY want amy sherman-palladino to win because i've loved her for so long (gilmore girls)

prediction: i'm not going to wager a guess because i haven't seen all these episodes.  and this is the category i should be an expert at because i'm a comedy writer.  so we will see!

i could keep making guesses but i am sure i have bored you to tears.  i can't wait for tonight! stars should start arriving on the red carpet soon!

YAY EMMYS!
