December 26, 2016

that is right my friends! i am FINALLY moving back to LA after five years away!

it is crazy how it happened.

you all know that i lived in LA 5 1/2 years ago (oh my gosh was it really that long ago?!!) and that i am a tv writer.  i would say aspiring tv writer but in the wise words of shonda rhimes "i don't believe in the term aspiring writer.  if you love to write, you're a writer, go write." so that is what i am doing.

5 years ago i did two internships in LA at two production companies to get my foot in the door to become a tv writer.  i want to write comedy television and i went to LA with a modern family spec.  for your education, i wrote the anatomy of a tv show so you know how this works and when i say i wrote a spec script for modern family you know what that means. but in case you haven't read that post, a spec script is a script you write entirely for your own personal use.  christopher lloyd (creator) isn't going to call me and ask to buy the episode of modern family that i wrote.  it is a script that i use to show to producers, other writers, whomever to show what i can do and that i can write.

i hate that it has taken me this long to get back to LA.  i missed it so much.  i went back in 2013 to see and feel if it was time for me to move back, but it wasn't because i just gone on my second first date with taran.  back in april, taran and i went to LA because he had never been and i didn't want taran to move to a place that he had never even been to.

in november we started getting really serious about it.  we started planning the move and this is where the really great part comes in.  taran's work has an office in the LA area.  so that was a huge part of our planning to move.

when i got fired  last friday, everything fell into place.  that whole week, we had been looking at apartments because i was starting to lose my mind that we weren't in LA yet.  i had had enough and was going crazy that we were still in Utah.  taran talked to his boss boss and said that he wanted to transfer to the LA office.  his boss boss said that he was considering giving him a promotion in the first place (because duh, its taran and he is brilliant) where taran would physically go the places where they need  a tech support guy and taran would fix the problems on site.  this would be a promotion and come with a raise.

like i said, the whole week leading up to that friday i got fired, we were looking at apartments and found one that we could actually afford and were emailing a lot with the landlord.  it seemed almost too good to be true.  taran wanted to wait until he got this promotion.

so i got fired.  there was nothing keeping me in utah anymore.  there was no point in me applying and looking for jobs in utah when at any moment tarans boss would promote him and then we would pack up everything and leave.

it was time.  it was beyond time.  it was time to move.  it was time for our adventure.

we prayed about it.  we freaked out.  we took turns freaking out.  we took turns having panic attacks when we signed the lease on our new apartment the day after i got fired and had synchronized panic attacks when we paid the landlord an insane amount of money.

in this post i talk about all the things i miss about LA and it still rings true.  LA is where i fit in.   LA is where i feel most at home.  LA is where i am me. it is my home.

i can't wait to move.  we move on jan. 21.  its quick, i know!  but i can't waste anymore time here!

also, i have never been more stressed in my entire life than i am now.  i am pushing myself so hard.  i have this goal to write a brand new pilot in less than a month.  which  is impossible.  i am also taking the aaron sorkin masterclass in screenwriting and want to finish that before we move there.

i have reached out to every single contact i have.  i have followed every job lead i have.  i want an assistant job or a PA job.  my dear friend has come through for me and given me some great job leads thank goodness he is saving my butt.  i know i will get a job once im there but how this industry works is you don't get a job until you are physically there and i hate that part about the industry.

i am going to be a tv writer.  i have to try.  and even if i fail, we are still settling in LA.  i don't know what the future holds, but from where i am standing, that is what our future holds.  from the beginning, we decided we were going to settle in california, in LA and i can't wait for this chapter of our lives to start.

let the adventure begin!!

12 days of blogging: my favorite Christmas crafts

merry Christmas eve eve! Christmas is almost here, can you hardly stand it?

i am so happy to be home with my family.  just one more day after this of 12 days of blogging!

today we are sharing our favorite Christmas crafts and tomorrow we are sharing what what are you excited about in the New year!  thanks so much to everyone who linked up with us for 12 days of blogging!  kendra and i have loved this!

these are ornaments that my mom had my sisters and i make when we were kids.  we painted them and i will always treasure them.

the perfect craft that i think is a tradition in every household is making a gingerbread house!  i joked with taran while we were making it that the gingerbread house at Christmastime is what pumpkins are at halloween.  hahha!

being the engineer that he is, taran insisted that we let the house sit overnight before we decorated it so the structure would hold.  way to cramp my style!  i wanted to get to the fun part! but wait we did.

and then the fun part began!

i love how on the box it has this magical gingerbread house that you are supposed to magically craft out of the box but there is absolutely no way that you could make the gingerbread house on the box with the frosting they give you.

my finished product always looks like a sad droopy orphanage that would be in a halloween film or something.

nevertheless, i still like having a gingerbread house in the apartment at Christmastime!

what are your favorite Christmas crafts!

tomorrow is the last day os 12 days of blogging!  the last prompt is: what are you most looking forward to in the new year?

12 days of blogging: my favorite Christmas memory with pictures!

guys!! there are only three posts left (including this one) for 12 days of blogging! let me list the remaining posts:

Tenth Day -  Dec 22. Your favorite Christmas memory with pictures of Christmas past

Eleventh Day -  Dec 23. Your favorite Christmas crafts

Twelfth Day -  Dec 24. What are you excited about in the New year
Christmas is so close i am soooo excited!! today i go home for Christmas!  i can't wait!   we will all be together and it will be so great.  it will be so chaotic with 11 adults and 8 babies but i love the chaos.  once one baby starts crying, they all start crying.  all at once.  its kind of hilarious and really stressful.
i mentioned that i have a brother named jon that we "adopted" who is coming home for Christmas!  i haven't seen him in FIVE YEARS!! his name is jon and he is from basque country in northern spain.  he was a foreign exchange student five years ago and lived with my parents when my sisters and i all had moved out.  he went to my old high school for a year and is permanently a member of our family.  we love him and he is such an amazing kid.  he just finished a semester at a university in texas and decided to come to us for Christmas instead of going home! i can't WAIT to see him when i get home tonight!
this prompt is tricky.  really, my favorite Christmas memory is when we got max for Christmas but that was a gift and this prompt calls for a memory!

i think my favorite Christmas memory is what we would do each Christmas morning as kids.  we were obviously super excited, so we would all wake up really early, like 6 or 7 am.  i mentioned that we had this great basket of Christmas books and on Christmas eve we would take some of them upstairs to where all our bedrooms were.  then, on Christmas morning while we waited for our parents for put the final touches on our presents, we could gather in my oldest sister jessica's room and she would read us Christmas stories.  we would all gather in her bed and she would read to us and we would all giggle and i remember having butterflies in my stomach because we were so excited. (jessica is the one above holding the plaque.  i have zero idea what the plaque is for.) i loved those moments with my sisters those Christmas mornings.

then my parents would call out to us that it was time to come down and we would all line up in age order (switching off years! youngest to oldest one year- oldest to youngest the next year! we take this stuff seriously!)  then the cue to come downstairs was the dancing santa.  the dancing santa shook his booty while playing rockin' around the Christmas tree. then we would bolt downstairs and would first go to our stockings and then rip open our presents.

the two above pictures are pictures that i have no idea what they are.  when i realized this prompt was today i texted kendra my lovely co host for this linkup and said "i don't have any pictures of Christmas past! they're all back home!" well luckily jon is already home for Christmas so i called him and asked to go into my mom's very organized boxes of pictures and take pictures of pictures and text them to me.  so i got some strange ones because i wasn't there to hand pick the pictures.  but THANK YOU BROTHER for sending me these or else i would have nothing.

the guys in the pictures above were guys that practically lived at our house when my two oldest sisters were in high school.  quinn and kyle. kyle has the red hair and quinn is blonde.  i send my sisters these pictures and asked them what was happening in these pics and they have no idea.  oh well.  i know they never celebrated Christmas with us, so i think this is just pictures of when my sisters gave them their presents?

i assume this is some kind of Christmas pageant i was in?  i have no memory of this.
now this! i do know what this is! this was when we got our karaoke machine i believe! man we used that a TON.  i would say it was the best purchase and best Christmas present other than our dog that we got for Christmas.  that Christmas day we got it, we spent the entire day just singing allll day and going through allll the songs.  and apparently we already had choreography?

another one of my favorite Christmas memories (wow is this post getting really long?) is our tradition of going to a chinese restaurant every year with our neighbor friends.  i loved it!  we would all gather at the same chinese restaurant every year and bring some of our presents (of course) and share what we got and laugh and talk and once we got older it was even more fun because some of us had moved out and we hadn't seen each other in a long time so it was so great to see each other.  i love that tradition.

now its your turn!  what is your favorite Christmas memory! sorry this post was so long! i can't wait to hear all about your memories! linkup below!

Christmas card 2016

i was so busy this december that i really didn't have time to make a Christmas card so this card i just made in two seconds and am throwing up here and on social media.  this holiday card with letter won't be nearly as funny as taylor's because that girl is hilarious.

we traveled a bit this year.  the whole family gathered for memorial day weekend which was a lot of fun and my niece london and i shared birthday celebrations which was really cute.  in april, taran and i went to LA because i was dying to go "home" because if you know me, you know that LA is my favorite place on earth and where i feel most at home.  in september, we went on family vacation to newport beach and took all the nieces and nephews to disneyland.  it was incredible to see disneyland through kid's eyes.  i wouldn't have missed that for the world.  over thanksgiving, taran and i went to new york city and had the time of our lives.  we also nearly killed ourselves and our feet from all the walking and exploring we did.  it was one of our favorite vacations we had been on we miss new york everyday and can't wait to go back someday!

this year taran's engineering consulting business has really taken off.  i am so proud of him.  i have never known a man who works harder, who has such a thirst for learning.  he is always reading books on how he can learn, how he can become a better engineer.  he constantly amazes me.  he is such a hard worker.

he has also been thriving at his job as a technical support engineer.  he has started teaching solidworks classes. what's solidworks?  explaining what my husband's job is takes a while to explain and i have to explain it a lot . so here goes.  he is an engineer.  he uses a program called solidworks.  it is a 3d cad (computer aided design) program.  when designing a product, like a medical device, you have to do it in 3d and you have to all kinds of things like math and geometry and test it using "flow simiulation" to test the stress of elements on the product.  like if it is a pipe you have to test in the program if the pipe can withstand the stress of water going through the pipe.  these are the kinds of things he does in his consulting business.

in his day job, people call him because they have problems with solidworks and he solves those problems and walks them through what went wrong and how to fix their issues with the program. he has passed multiple certifications and i am so proud of him because he is teaching solidworks classes now which is huge for him because he doesn't like public speaking.

his bosses are so impressed with him that they are taking him on application engineering calls where they take him to the actual businesses to fix the solidworks programs in person.  my husband ROCKS.

and me.  so you know i got fired.  but you don't have to worry about me.  i got things a cookin'.  this year i tried to be a 911 dispatcher which i quit after two months.  i have decided it was not a failure.  i wanted to be in law enforcement sooo badly and i would always wonder if i had what it takes, and now i know that i don't have what it takes.  now i don't wonder anymore.  after dispatching, i did temp work until i got a job working for my Church.  i was fired last friday.  but no hard feelings, it is for the best.

the rest of my family is good.  i have 3 older sisters.  in order of oldest to youngest:

jessica lives in palo alto while her husband is doing a medical research fellowship at stanford.  he is creating solutions to healthcare problems and recently went to new zealand and met with the prime minister to share he and his team's ideas on health care solutions.  jessica has 3 children and is pregnant and due in may.

andrea lives 20 minutes away from me, just north of salt lake city and her husabnd is a lawyer.  she has 3 boys and is expecting her fourth boy due in april.

rachelle lives in gilbert arizona while her husband goes to arizona state doing getting a grad degree in data analysis or something i don't understand.  rachelle has two girls.

my parents live in the house i grew up in but are trying to sell it.  this past summer they traveled to russia, iceland and finland where my dad's brother is serving a mission for our church with my aunt.  my dad has a plane and a pilots license and my parents love love love going on adventures in his plane and flying to new places.  they mostly fly over the grand canyon or over zion national park because it is so close. they also fly to visit rachelle and jessica.  and they fly up here to salt lake city too.

my dad still has his rock band and is still the coolest dad in the world. he also has his free clinic that he started when i was 9 and it is thriving . he is semi-retired and works at the practice that bought his practice, just two days a week.  so yes, my dad is better than yours.

my mom keeps busy being awesome and being the best grandma ever and currently if you counted has 8 grandbabies and can't wait for 2 more to come.

like i told you, this was not a funny Christmas letter and i wish i had that talent, but i don't! oh well!

merry Christmas, happy holiday, Hanukkah, festivus or whatever you celebrate!

12 days of blogging: what i'm most grateful for

today is our ninth day of 12 days of blogging with kendra of be a lighthouse!  we are having so much fun with this linkup and hope you are too.

here are the remaining prompts:

Ninth Day -  Dec 21. What are you most grateful for this Christmas season

Tenth Day -  Dec 22. Your favorite Christmas memory with pictures of Christmas past

Eleventh Day -  Dec 23. Your favorite Christmas crafts

Twelfth Day -  Dec 24. What are you excited about in the New year
so today is to share what you are most grateful for this Christmas season!

i kept this quiet and purposefully hid this post in the many 12 days of blogging posts, but last friday i got fired.  merry Christmas, right? its humiliating and terrible and horrible and there are few good words to be said about being fired.  but oddly enough, there have been a lot of good things to come out of this firing. ill tell you soon, but not quite yet.  the suspense!

but at the same time, there is no denying that i lost my job.   a 20 second mistake cost me my job.  when you have access to 2 million followers on twitter and you make a mistake on that account, there is no room for forgiveness.  i am angry and feel emotionally beaten to a pulp.  like if someone would take a picture of my soul it would be bloody and bruised.

there is still a lot to be grateful for.

i am grateful that taran and i just went to new york and got to explore and have a wonderful adventure together.

i am grateful that we have a warm apartment that we  get to come home to with heat and food and blankets and tv and a number of other luxuries.

i am grateful that the other weekend when that crazy guy hit my car and broke into the apartment literally next to ours and started fighting with the family, we were safe and i feel guilty saying this, but he didn't break

i am grateful that taran has a good stable job that he has been at for a while now that loves him and his work.

i am grateful that taran's consulting business has taken off and he gets pretty steady work from it and he gets to learn and design and do engineering things i don't understand.  it makes him happy.

i am grateful that i am married to the most amazing, incredible, selfless man on earth who makes me happier than i ever imagined.

i am grateful that i have a father in Heaven who loves me more than i could possibly understand.

i am grateful that i have two nieces and/or nephews on the way.

i am grateful that that it is almost Christmas and i will be joining my family for the holidays later this week!

i am grateful that taran loves to experience adventures with me and loves to take leaps into the unknown with me.

i am grateful that taran has such a hunger for learning.  it is 100% the reason why he is so successful.  and that he is such a hard worker.

i am grateful that i have such amazing in laws.  they are so good to me and i really lucked out in that department.

i am grateful that for my family and especially my parents.  they never fail to support me.  pretty sure they love taran more than me.

i am grateful that i have 4 guardian angels, both sets of grandparents.  i am really, really lucky.

i am grateful that i have a really honest and transparent marriage.  we don't lie or keep secrets from each other.  we communicate.  we laugh together.  we are so in love.  and i couldn't be luckier.

merry Christmas my darlings.

combine the corn syrup and the peanut butter and put in a sauce pan on medium heat.

stir syrup and peanut butter together until it looks like this

cover a whatever size pan this is (?? you know. the normal size pan.) with parchment paper.

pour the corn flake mix onto the parchment paper.  let it cool. i just put mine outside because it is 20 degrees here.

once cooled, its time to add the chocolate!

get two bags of milk chocolate chips, or even more if you want (size? you know, this size) and melt in microwave.

my trick for smooth chocolate is putting a bit of vegetable oil in with the chocolate.  it keeps it very smooth!

and ta-da we have the finished product!  let it sit out over night while the chocolate cools before servings so it is all stuck together and delicious.  i know what i am having for breakfast!!

now please! share with us your favorite Christmas recipes! i can't wait to hear and try you recipes out!
