Lot 48: the real rain man

the real rain man

this is the ultimate tbt post.  i really, really REALLY wish i had a real picture of this story, because i know i had one! so we will have to do with google search images.

we have all seen this movie, right?  right? well, except me.  my husband is watching it right now and that is how i came up with the idea for this post.  and it's a really good story.  but i need to see the actual movie.

in high school, we had a mandatory school assembly with the real rain man, kim peek.  he sat in the front of the auditorium and there was a mic set up at the front where we could go ask questions.  i have to tell you that he was everything you imagined him to be.  this guy was whip smart.  from what i understand, and what his manager guy told us before kim took it away, was that the split down your brain that splits the hemispheres wasn't there, so things that we normally wouldn't remember word for word that we had read, he remembered every single detail.  people started asking him dates, like what day of the week was april 27 1927 and he could tell you.  people asked him to quote certain lines and shakespeare and he could.  it was crazy.  he even brought his oscar that he won at the academy awards and had it passed around through the crowd.  that was really cool, i held an actual oscar!!

i decided i wanted to ask him a question, i can't for the life of me remember what it was, but i remember what i was wearing.  i was wearing an orange dress with black tights.  was it near halloween?? i don't remember.  was it my junior or senior year? i don't remember.  but i walked up to the mic in front of the whole school and asked him a question.  he answered without blinking, without barely having to think, and then he said "i like you." and he hugged me, in front of everyone.  it was pretty awesome. it was one of the highlights of my high school experience.

what was your most memorable high school experience?? there is one other that actually tops this, but it was a super secret theater club thing that i took an oath to never reveal.  sister of mine, rachelle? sister of mine andrea? are you reading?  you know what i'm talking about. sister of mine jessica, my devoted reader, you probably know what i'm talking about. key phrase: after closing night of last play of your senior year.

mystery!! happy thursday!!

  1. I've never seen the movie either! I actually didn't even know that there was a real "rainman". Adding it to Netflix... And what an awesome experience - the oscar AND the hug! :)
