Lot 48: why i won't follow you

why i won't follow you

i love reading blogs, i really do.  i could, and do, read them for hours.  but there are sooooo many blogs out there.  how are you supposed to choose what blogs to follow and what to follow?  i am no expert, but i think there are a few annoying things that we all think are annoying that we can just lay on the table.

your blog design hurts my eyes. sorry, but it's true.  when i first started blogging seriously, i was stupid enough to pay for sponsorships when my blog looks absolutely awful.  i "designed" it myself, and i know that i am a horrible designer.  how do i know? people have told me. there are quite a few blogs that are pretty popular but i just can't read them because i can't stand to look at their design.  having a good blog design is a must.

your content is "bleh."  if you don't engage me and make me want to read your post, then i'm not going to stick around.  if i take the time to read a blog, i want the writer to be funny, entertaining and most of all, a good story teller.  i don't want to even notice if the post is long because i am so wrapped up in what the writer has to say.

if you are a fashion, beauty, or fitness blogger.  this is just my own personal preference.  none of that interests me.  some people are "/" bloggers, meaning they are beauty AND lifestyle or fashion AND lifestyle, and in that case, if i really like them, i follow them.  but i always, always skip their fashion posts because they are no interest to me.

you have no about page. or your about page sucks. why?  why would you have no about page?  i want to know who i am reading.  i want to know who i am making friends with!! also, if your about page is just a list of things you like to do with no pictures.  that's not fun.  i don't want to read things without pictures!! what is this? school??  i might let it slide if you're funny and i read your latest post and like it and your design is really pretty.  but mostly, it just don't follow.

you're content is inconsistent.  if the last time you posted was in june, i am not going to follow you because i know that you are more interested in reading blogs than writing a blog, which is totally fine! so what is the point in following you if you don't ever write anything??

above all, i want the writer to be fun.  i want to read a blog where i feel like i could be friends with the writer and that every time i read a post, i feel like we are just chatting.  if i feel that way when i read your blog, i will follow you.

if all you write is sponsored posts.  i get that we want to make some money off our blogging, but when alllll a blogger writes is sponsored posts, that just isn't interesting to me.  it isn't fun, it's boring.  i want to hear about you, i want to hear about your life.

what do you look for when you follow a blog???

ps.  please remember to take a moment to remember the awful tragedy that happened to our country 13 years ago today.  i will be wearing red, white and blue and be sending out lots of prayers for the victims of the world trade towers.

  1. I agree with all of these well except for the fashion blogger bit. I love drooling over gorgeous clothes I could never afford however food bloggers...it just doesn't interest me at all (because I hate cooking haha).

  2. I totally skip over fashion blogs, too. And YES to the about me page. I recently re-did mine because before I had one picture and a bunch of lists... not fun!

  3. Yes to the poor blog designs! There are so many blogs that I loved, but their fonts were too small or too light to read. I found myself squinting my eyes about an inch from the screen just to read their posts!

I skip fashion blogs too. I couldn't care less what bag you are wearing or what shoes you just purchased. I want to know about your life... not your closet!

  4. I don't read blogs that only do sponsored posts. For some reason they really annoy me.

  5. It really bugs me when they don't have an about me or a picture. How do I know I'm not being catfished?! It could be a 40 year-old man talking about what's in his purse. Terrifying!

  6. I am really starting to dislike the "10 ways to" ... ONLY posts. If that is ALL they post, I will not follow. I want to know the person too!

  7. Also, blogs that OVER talk their marriage! I love marriage and want to be part of one day! ;) But I can only handle so much about marriage, especially when they offer advice on EVERY posts and they are no a professional. HA! AND ... I never read baby update posts. I.just.don't.care. Eek, I feel like a horrible person, yet please to have that off my chest.

  8. I am with you! I can't bring myself to do the fashion bloggers. It's not something I'm into or like, personally.

  9. I agree with the blog design thing... if your design hurts my eyes or your text is too hard to read I will lose interest in a second. I also am not a huge fan of the fashion blogs nor do I like to read the blogs that focus mainly on sponsored posts. I know that this is how some people supplement their income, but I want to read some real posts too... not just the ones they are being compensated for writing. I also agree that a fun "About Me" is always nice. I love to see the pictures people put there and then read about what they thinks defines who they are!

  10. I'd have to say I agree with all of these. Especially the fashion/fitness/insertwhatevernichehere. I like life blogs. I mean, I follow a few that are niche specific, but for the most part, I'm a lifestyle blogger and that's what I like to read. I'm interested in a person's story, not what free crap they got.

  11. I skip over fashion bloggers that feature unattainable fashion choices... if your skirt cost more than I make in a week than it's of no inspiration to me. I love seeing girls make outfits out of affordable pieces that I could realistically recreate.

  12. I love it when blogs are uncluttered. Small fonts hurt my eyes and the overly colorful ones do, too. And a big yes to the writer being fun. While I do like fashion blogs (eye candy!) and lifestyle blogs, I keep going back to the good old personal blogs. And yes, they need to be consistently updated, too.

  13. So, I probably could have written this! You pretty much summed up all of my criteria. Mostly - I WANT TO LIKE YOU. If I don't like you, I don't want to read you, because what's the point?

  14. Loved this post. I only like fashion posts if I can relate to them and they have good pictures but not magazine quality. I also prefer when the fashion posts don't show new pieces all the time- I mean, that is so unrealistic. Other than that, I love looking at pictures of food but won't usually read the post unless I absolutely love the recipe. I definitely prefer lifestyle blogs more than anything.

  15. I definitely agree with the fashion/beauty/fitness bloggers and the ones with too many sponsored posts! It's hard to get a feel for all of them when they never actually talk about themselves? I like relatable subjects and problems and funny stories!

  16. So, so, so agree with the sponsored posts! I get that some people try and make money off their blog, but there is a point where it is too much. Another thing that gets me is too many link-ups! If you can't think up something to write on your own every now and then you just shouldn't have a blog

  17. Amen to the "every post is a sponsored post" comment!!! I HATE when bloggers have all sponsored posts! It's unoriginal and just plain boring!!! I love this list! It's so honest and hilarious!

  18. I follow a few fashion blogs but usually mark them as read unless my eye catches a headline one day. With you though...

  19. yes, to almost every single one of these. Except maybe the fashion ones part...I love fashion so I enjoy those ones , but everything else you said is spot on with me. I go through Bloglovin at the end of every month and if they haven't posted anything that month, chances are I'm unfollowing. And OMG do I hate when all someone writes are sponsored posts. I know you have to do them because they are paying you but uggghhh not every single day

  20. Yup to all of these (but like some of the other bloggers here, I, too, happen to like fashion/fitness blogs). Every now and then I am asked to do a sponsored post but I really try to throw in my own content there, too, because you're right--unless it's a product I'm interested in picking up, chances are that post won't appeal to me.

And yes to bad design. I have been guilty of that in the past (and glad I splurged recently and paid a designer to help me!)

    Have a great weekend :)

  21. Haha love it! I only follow a select few fashion and beauty blogs...mainly lifestyle. But what even do we mean by that? :)

  22. I loved this! It sums up so much of how I feel too! I really enjoy the community of blogging. I agree and think that it is so important to engage readers in a conversation! Really love your blog! <3
